Default Keyser scores again!!

WOO HOOOO

I been workin with Heatsoaked2 (from ECC) since back in Dec so I could get both rear framerails off of the elkie he was parting out. I had to wait on my tax refund. He hung in there with me, waited for me to send the M.O., and they arrived today! Got both framerails, plus one of the seatbelt releases that stick out into the door jamb for $50 + shipping ($28)!!!

Is that a common problem in that part of the country to have the rear framerails rot?

I don't know about WV but here in Mass you can tell the frame is rotted when the rear bumper falls to the ground. They look like nice frame rails

It's VERY common on elkies in snow/salt country for the rear framerails to rot away. Since they are boxed and not "C" channel, they retain the water/salt, and rot away. If you west coast guys come across any, there is always a market for them. Look at where mine were cut off. Tho not rare, it can be hard to find a good set sometimes. Seems to run in cycles. The ones I just got only have mild surface rust on them, making me smile a lot! I think this elkie of mine spent most of its life in Pa or Oh, lots of rust problems (which means ground probs for the electrical system). These will fix the last of that, except for the quarters.

P.S. I was just looking at the rails, and they are 2 pieces of "C" channel welded together! The seam runs down the middle of the top and bottom surfaces. This is where it rusts out, thru the welded areas. No wonder!

See Rob! ^^^^^^^^^ I told ya!!

As far as splicing them in goes, here's a couple tricks I have learned from how the street/hot rodders splice an S-10 front sub-frame into an older chassis (very popular swap!).

Cut the replacement piece so ends are square to the length. Mark where you will need to cut the stock framerails off by accurately measuring. Then, on both sides of the main rail, extend the cut line out like this <, when viewed from the side, on BOTH sides. Then cut the replacement piece so the sides are cut IN like this <, so when they are placed together, all the cut places are butted together.

Once all that is welded up, weld reinforcing plates on both sides so they overlap all the cutlines/welds.

Here's some pics

Mark,, if you want to make it look like it never rusted,, think about putting the braces inside the frame rail, put plug holes in both sections install the used frame rail line her up and weld it in, the support will be on the inside of the frame ,,out of sight out of mind,, just a thought,, and when you get a chance send me the criuse in on the river front dates so I can start planning for our region,, Matty man
