Default 81 malibu fuel gauge

My fuel gauge reads past full. I have replaced sending unit and checked all grounds. There is power at the gauges but at the connector under the dash with the wire from the sender to the gauge there is no power I'm running out of ideas. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

The signal from the sender is a variable ground. The sender is has a ground on one side and a varistor who's resistance goes up as the tank fills. If you are reading past full then the wire from the sender to the gauge is probably open. If you want to check the gauge short the signal pin to ground, it should read empty. This might help:

In the event that does not work, try either running a new wire from tank to sender or checking the OEM sender wire from gauge to the tank. I have this very same issue on my 78 and the ONLY thing left is to do this very step. The wire may have been pinched or chaffed straight to ground. But I am running Autometer gauges.
