Default alternator wiring

I have a 85 Regal. I swapped the v6 with a 305 from a 87 Iroc. Im having problems with the charging(alternator) system. my batterykeeps dying. I might have it wired wrong. Any suggestions? should i get the old alternator the car originally had?

It also wouldn't hurt to take the alternator and or battery down to the parts store and have them load test them.

I was looking at the diagram poltergeist posted. I remember my setup seeming less complicated. The large bolt on the back has a wire that goes straight to the battery with a large gauge wire, I think mine is 8 gauge. The square white plug has two wires, one wire goes to the post on the alternator, and the other leads back to the idiot light in the dash. If that idiot light is burned out, disconnected, or even if it was swapped with an LED, the resistance of that circuit has to be there to excite the internal regulator.

And, do you have a good ground between the engine to frame, and battery to frame/body?

I have heard people say you need to have the idiot light, but when I took mine completely out to put in all autometer gauges I never put a light back in and haven't had any trouble with mine charging. I ran into some difficult wiring of a 1 wire alternator I bought a while back but got that figure out as well. Are both of the alternators 3 wire, a plug w/2 wires and a batt wire?

You'll have to trace it back through the dash.

If for some reason your monte has the gauges and not an idiot light, I believe you can hook that wire from the alternator to a switched 12V source. Some guys use the power wire at the wiper motor as its fairly close by.
