It stays up by itself, its just the wind was really high yesterday. My new"305" should be up and running on Wednesday. And no Terminator,I'm not pushing power with my feet. That's what either Donny or Woody will be doing after the burnout contest.

Best sleeper I ever saw raced SoloI in a diff class from me. It was a '63 BugEye Sprite, with a 3.8 Buick V6/350 (w/shift kit). It had the same power-to-weight ratio as a Hemi Cuda (70-71s), only it didn't slow down much at the curves!! But he had it painted this hideous Grass Green color! (this was '77-'78)

Steel beasts, the starter needs shimed.
Would you beleive the mechanic took the dash a part because there was no ground???
Timing 180 degrees out, wire cut to starter!!!!:BangHead:
He should be on here soon.
Donny

1980steelbeast
05-13-2011, 08:51 PM
Here's the story.
Car has no power to the switch so my mechanic thinks somethings wrong. He yanks out everything last night while im at work. I think he's messing with the timing and little odds and ends. Turns out,he screws it up more than what it was by switching out the wires. He blows my battery in the process.I tow it to my buddies shop to see what happened and why there's no power. One of the techs at the shop starts hacking away at the dash thinking its the ignition switch. Donny calls and says "Hey,Im in the area,I'll be heading that way.I go along with Donny and pick up the switches to see if that's the problem. Long story short,Donny gets pissed because they're leaving my car for other work and then Super Donny goes to hitting everywhere with a test light and has me taping up naked wires. After a good 45 minutes of chasing naked wires with tape,Donny starts testing the grounds and boom,we have power in the dash and the alarm comes on.Donny gets the car back in the air and hooks the starter back up correctly and she fires right back up like a couple days before. Donny tweaks the timing and distributor and gets it idling right. By this time,I'm happier than a punk in jail since I can hear my baby again. I'm ready to drive off and then we noticed the guy who swapped the engine didn't put the starter shims back or the flywheel bolts aren't tight because I moved and I heard the starter hit the flywheel.I left it at the shop til tomorrow morning. Now I'm out of pocket for a new battery since the motor swap guy fried my battery. Good thing is I only paid 280 for a motor removal and motor drop in. Everything else is working out ok. May show up late in Belton til the kinks get worked out again but the good news is that Donny got me started with power again and at least its running. My mechanic is pissed cause I said I'm not paying him anymore cash since I had to tow it away and buy a new battery. I feel like I drove it over there, and I should of been driving it today instead of a tow.

nowukno
05-14-2011, 07:06 AM
:eek: man that sounds like a nitemare man.Glad you and Donny where able to get to the bottom of this. So,do you ever plan on taking it back to those guys again??

1980steelbeast
05-14-2011, 07:34 PM
Problem after problem! I get the car back running with Donny yesterday, and as soon as he leaves,we tighten the starter back up,I crank it up and screech! A grinding sound.Guess what? Its the starter interfering with the flywheel. I leave it as it is til morning since I cant drive it off. I come back and have the techs reposition and reinstall the starter. Cranks up good. Runs for about a 10 minutes and we shut it down and tighten up the starter again. So we crank it to see whats up,screech again! They noticed the starter got cracked across the top.So they take, the starter off and put on my spare, same thing happens again. So,two starters got destroyed today! What's going on?! Never had this problem before? I have shims but I don't know why they didn't use them?
Are the shims the problem?! It was running fine until the motor swap guy screwed stuff up with "wiring/timing". I never had any shims before with the old engine and it seems to only happen when it gets bolted down. :cussing:

nowukno
05-14-2011, 09:13 PM

High torque starter?,you might need one if not,how many teeth on the starter sounds like shims will be needed!!
These are regular starters I used. I've never heard of this issue before and never had it. It seems like when the shop tightens it,it breaks. IDK. I purchased shims and are my next step whenever I get the urge to open my eyes again...:BangHead::barf:

Good news people! I just did the oil change and that white murky oil changed to black when I drained it. I guess it changed colors after running the engine yesterday. I got the oil change and I'm now running Valvoline VR-1 Racing Oil. It feels a lot better and the fluid levels are still remaining the same. So no head gasket leaks or cracked block worries! I did notice that theres more pressure built up with this racing oil compared to regular conventional oil.

None of it is the best go to a sunoco or 76 gas station and get some 100 octane, its only about $9 to $12 a gallon. Other than that you will be wasting time pouring (Octane Booster) in your tank.. :dontknow:

No ,nothing will truly work, you need 92 octane or higher or bump your timing down to see if it helps..

Haha no need for 100 octane, like I said I run mine on 93 and with timing set right I've never had an issue.

Btw I've done the octane booster trick to an old 440 coupe my dad had before with decent results.

Now if only I could get E85 in my state, 100 octane equivalent and cheaper then hightest gas.

So today I tried to change carbs to see if my Q-Jet would be better on gas than the Edelbrock, Q-Jet got too much air and wouldn't stay running so The Brock went back on. After that 2 hour ordeal,I run my car for a test drive and everything is well. As I'm about to go meet Donny at Keller's,guess what? The starter starts tripping again. No crank, just grinding. I try it a few times to see if it will catch. Nope! Is it the starter? Anyone have a regular starter on a performance engine? Anyone want to donate a working high torque starter to prevent me from committing an El Camino homicide?:sarcasm2:

So are you saying theres so much tork on the starter that it's flexing? Also I see you run a hi-tork starter, that had to have one also?
I guess what I'm asking is, does he have so much compression that it's causing the starters to (bend) or (break), cause he's already broke 2?
Donny

John B
05-29-2011, 04:00 AM
yes i needed the hi torque. i am running 12:1 compression, had to have a good set up if i wanted any reliability at all.
You definately want the bracket, how many flexes does the bolt holes for the starter take before ya crack the block at em. not much meat there for the forces being contained.

It's steel beast,
The shop we rescued it from broke the first 2. I'm not sure how many times they cranked them before they broke.
After he got it back it fired fine, then after a couple of starts the started free spinning, (not engaging the fly wheel) he then added shims and it worked fine for a couple of days, now it's free spinning again. I'm just wondering if it's just a bad starter?
The starter is killing him!!!:BangHead:

when ya build the brace:
set the starter up so it is sittin right where ya want it. the pic i show was the initial version, i later beefed it up so it hooks to 3 pan bolts and 2 starter bolts. On the back side of the pan bolt flange i fitted a piece of angle that butts up tight to the pan so those lil 1/4" bolts dont take all the hit. (I was bored one day and lookin for somthin to do) anyhow, its been working great for over a year.

Hey Steelbeast. Remember I mentioned on the phone that starters use special bolts. The shaft between the head of the bolt and the threads are thicker than a regular bolt. If you don't run those bolts the starter can move a little. Notice the thickness of the shaft. It will make a difference. The play can cause the starter to misalign and grind or break. Here is a link to O'Reilly auto parts starter bolt section. Yours are in there. I'd install the brace too. http://tinyurl.com/3h6wj8y

It's a lot like HEI distributor caps/rotors. A friend was burning his up about every 100 miles, cause he was using the cheapo ones. I pulled the AC/Delco off of mine and showed him. The material thickness of the rotor and cap of the AC/D one was OVER TWICE the thickness of the cheap one. That's why they kept burning thru (arcing)!!!

Don't try to cheap your way out of this unless you'd rather change starters than drive!

Hey Beasty, I guess you don't have the GM style of mounting holes on the manifold to mount your old bracket? Or if it's a high-rise the carb doesn't line up in front of a stock set-up? Look at this set-up, maybe this is an option for you. Your cable snaps into this plate. :cool2:

Well send me another tricked out 350 transmission while you're at it. I already beefed mine up 700hp with a shift kit! What else can be done? lol

Hey Beasty, you're gonna need more than a shift kit at 700HP! Once the cash starts flowing in we'll build you a trans that's bullet proof...No No No, Missle proof!!! :cool2:

Are superchargers too much for my setup? Is 11:1 compression too much? I've been eyeing an Edelbrock and Weiland for a few months? Any input?

I would want to lower the compression some for a super charger.

Yes on pump gas with a roots style blower. I'm at 10.4:1 and was toying around w/it for awhile and just decided to keep my motor now until I finish the car off then maybe build a 327 turbo motor. With those roots blowers you really wanna be around 9:1. So could you do it w/your setup? Yes with race gas and take out a ton of timing, but it wouldn't be worth it, especially for one of those superchargers.

Well I do have a GN engne that needs to be rebuilt but I wanted something faster in my elco. Trying to turbocharge this is too much work/plumbing for a daily driver. I drive this daily with premium but I've been told I can run premium for the first 6 months and then go to regular with octane boosters in the tank

Beastie , I would THINK long and HARD about spending that kind of money on a S/Charger unless you won the lottery :attn:if you did it , your compression 11:1 is way too high for the street , would best be low around maybe 8:5:1 and keeping your timing retarded so no detonation or else your engine just might blow :barf:.... nobody mentioned the life span of a super charged engine , its cut in half possibly and are you just going drive it on weekend cruises or just the race track .... And don't forget replacing the head bolts from time to time because they will stretch from all that compression going on in the engine .... I would ask some Hot Rodders who have S/C'ed engines and see what they like & dislike about this set-up for the street .... AND Beastie is it driveable for the Hwy like to Belton or further or will it be a " Trailer Queen " :dontknow: I'm not trying to rain on your parade , just do your homework and think it out ... And how fast do you want to go ? speed limit is still 70 MPH :attn: ..... Thanks Mr. Old Geezer:hello:

I've been thinking for a long time. Its just the feeling of being the king of the street with a powerful engine makes me want more power. I sure don't wanna kill my engine so now I'm sure reconsidering that option. What's left to do now to get power?

Move more air, heads, cam, exhaust. Also lose weight on the car remove un needed parts or replace with lighter parts.

Don't get me wrong, I love blower motors and would highly consider one for my elky. But a daily driver? Bad idea..... Heads on a small book are a good place to start, I don't remember you saying what you were running on it now. Steel roller rockers are a decent priced piece also and run fine on the street..... Weight removal would help, those bumpers are heavy, but dont go nuts on weight removal if you going to drive it daily... Just my .02:cool:

Just so you can prepare yourself. Being Kang is no easy task. In my case I have over 1100 hp and I'm nowhere near the king here. How much hp will get you to king status in your hood?

Good luck & have fun.

Well 600hp is well enough for me for a daily driver. I'm already pushing 475 with 460tq.

Does anybody know the sweet spot with timing? I have the lines almost perfectly lined up on the crank pulley. Its starts up fine and runs good, but is there a way to make timing perfect?

Poltergeist

A lot depends on the cam and the heads you have. Typically you can go 20~30* of timing, at least with most of the setups I've worked with.

Looking into the LS2 swap in another elco.....what's the price range with trans?

nowukno
10-11-2011, 04:28 PM
usually depends on the seller but ive seen motor, trans, harness go for upwards of $4000 and as low as $1500 you'll also need fuel tank pump and sender if you plan on going with the factory injection.. But it will run like a beast :D.

Waiting for the new starter to break. Has it yet? I read all 16 pages and everyone is missing the unavailable.

Without saying too much, you are running an 11:1 383 stroker with a 12.5 inch 143 tooth flexplate.

Starts fine when cold but kills itself when warm. The answer is simple. Initial timing. Grab a timing light and find out. Most engines run best with 6-10 degrees initial and total of 32-38 degrees at full advance. I'd be willing to bet you were well over 10 degrees initial with the old starters and the engine was spinning backwards during cranking. This either rips teeth off the flexplate or breakes the nose off the starter.

The high torque starter might do the trick for awhile, but sooner or later if you don't get it straighened out, you will break the nose off of it.

Two choices for a long term fix. Install a retard box piggy backed to an MSD 6A or 6AL, or just pull the timing back and adjust everything else around that number.

Most parts stores will warranty a broken nose once, but sooner or later they will figure out it is not a defect in the part.

Good luck with it. Been there done that. I found out in 1989 that if you don't work at a parts store it can be rough getting a lifetime warrantied starter warrantied when the issue is the base tune. You got to be on the ball with 11:1 anything. I doubt if you can hear detonation over the exhaust and you might be killing the pistons and rod bearings as well.

Food for thought.

The new starter was installed with 2 shims and there were no problems with it. There's no nose on the end of it so I don't see any chance of the nose breaking off. With the new high torque starter,it does have a quieter sound as opposed to the old one when it whips the flywheel and there's no damage to the new 153 tooth flywheel.
It does have 11:1 compression says the build sheet and the timing has been tweaked to perfection.
The only problem I have now is I have to get the kickdown cable adjusted since this one is a universal one without a d shaped button. It has a screw in housing that tightens the cable. Has anyone seen one like that?
