Hey everyone, glad to meet you. I was informed that an ID number stamped on the front of the passenger side axle tube can tell us if we have an 8.5" 10 bolt.

My 1980 Elky has a #6AZ00232, or possibly 6AZC0232, anyone out there know how to decifer?:dontkno

caannen,
As near as I can tell 6AZ(C)0232 could read (?) 6AZG0232 and if so: 6AZ =2:41 open, G = Chevrolet gear & axle, 023 = 23rd. day of year it was made, and I don't know about the 2 unless it means 2nd shift (usually stamped D for days and N for nights).
I got this information from: Catalog of Malibu & El Camino ID Numbers 1964-87

Doug

Oh! I'm sorry! I should have welcomed you to the site first!! My bad.

For Chevrolet most are Here

For 79s Here

Yours breakouts to:
AZ = 2.41:1
G = Chevrolet Gear & Axle
002 would be 2nd day of the year it was made not sure what the 3rd 0 is.

A normal example is RCG220D for El Camino or Malibu of that year. If that is the code its possible its out of something else.
